Dallas, TX –
Contribution will fund teacher workshops reaching nearly 6,000 elementary and secondary students
With a goal of connecting the link for educators between natural resources, their role in energy production and the importance of environmental stewardship, Luminant recently donated $60,000 to fund two environmentally focused teacher workshops in the summer of 2012.
In partnership with Stephen F. Austin State University, Luminant contributed $30,000 to fund the “Energy, Economics and the Environment” summer workshop. The program, to be held June 10-15, will provide elementary and secondary teachers with a comprehensive overview of the relationship between the power generation process and environmental stewardship.
The company also made a second $30,000 donation to support the University of Texas at Arlington’s “Environmental Education Summer Institute” program, to be held June 24-29. Through field workshops, classroom seminars and power plant and mine tours, educators will gain insight into the energy industry and best reclamation practices to take back to their communities.
“With the potential to reach nearly 6,000 students, opportunities like these help equip teachers with the knowledge, tools and resources they need to effectively communicate energy-related topics with their students,” said Robert Gentry, curriculum manager of Luminant’s employee-focused continuing-education center, Luminant Academy. “We appreciate the opportunity to help them gain a greater understanding about the link between energy and the environment.”
Participating teachers will also receive three hours of graduate credit upon completion. For more information on either workshop, please contact SFA Professor of Education Dr. Alan Sowards or UTA Associate Dean of Professional Education Dr. Ann Cavallo.
