Dallas –
Donation will fund environmental education programs for elementary and secondary teachers
In keeping with its long history of responsible environmental stewardship and ongoing support of continuing education, Luminant recently donated $60,000 to fund two environmentally focused teacher workshops this summer.
Luminant contributed $30,000 to fund the “Energy, Economics and the Environment” summer workshop, to be held June 5-17, at Stephen F. Austin State University. Through classroom seminars, on-site field workshops and power plant and mine tours, elementary and secondary teachers will learn about the relationship between the power generation process and environmental stewardship.
In partnership with the University of Texas at Arlington, the company is also sponsoring the “Environmental Education Summer Institute” workshop for K-12 teachers through a second $30,000 donation. The program, to be held June 12-17, will provide educators with a comprehensive overview of the energy industry and best reclamation practices.
“Environmental education outreach is an essential part of Luminant’s philosophy, and we are proud to support programs that will help teachers expand their knowledge of earth sciences and energy,” said Robert Gentry, curriculum manager of Luminant’s employee focused continuing-education center, Luminant Academy. “Continuing education opportunities like these give our educators the tools, resources and the confidence they need to share the information they learned back in the classroom.”
Luminant Academy instructors and industry leaders will teach all workshop courses. Participating teachers will also receive three hours of graduate credit upon completion. For more information on either workshop, please contact SFA Professor of Education, Dr. Alan Sowards at asowards@sfasu.edu or UTA Associate Dean of Professional Education, Dr. Ann Cavallo at cavallo@uta.edu.
