Dallas –
Donation will fund educational energy programs for Texas elementary and secondary teachers
As part of its commitment to energy and environmental education, Luminant recently donated more than $50,000 to fund two teacher workshops this summer.
Luminant contributed $28,000 to fund the workshop “Energy, Economics and the Environment” held at Stephen F. Austin State University. Through this program, to be held June 6 – 18, elementary and secondary teachers will tour both a power plant and a mine to learn more about the power generation process, while also learning about environmental stewardship and alternative energy sources.
The company is also sponsoring the “2010 Energy and Environmental Science Education” workshop for K-12 teachers through a second $28,000 contribution. The University of Texas at Arlington program, to be held June 13 – 18, will provide educators with a working knowledge of the energy industry through hands-on courses.
“Luminant strongly believes in the benefits of education and is proud to support two programs which will help teachers explain the important role of energy in our country even better to students,” said Dirk Hughes, director of Luminant’s employee focused continuing-education center, Luminant Academy. “Providing continuing education to our state’s educators is a powerful way of ensuring that knowledge is shared with our youth.”
Both workshops will feature Luminant Academy instructors and provide participating teachers with three hours of graduate credit upon completion. For more information on either workshop, please contact SFA Professor of Education, Dr. Alan Sowards at asowards@sfasu.edu or UTA Associate Dean of Professional Education, Dr. Ann Cavallo at cavallo@uta.edu.
