Luminant launches 2009 Luminant Scholar environmental essay-writing contest
Meeting the new teacher, reuniting with friends and increasing environmental awareness — three things many fifth-graders across Texas will be doing this fall.
Luminant, the state’s largest power generation company, is sponsoring its annual Luminant Scholar Program in select Texas public school districts. The essay-writing contest provides fifth-graders an opportunity to share their thoughts on the state of the environment and how they can improve it — with the authors of the top essays winning scholarships for their future education.
“Luminant is excited to build on the success of this program and continue to challenge students to think of ways to protect their environment,” said Phil Wilson, senior vice president of public affairs at Luminant. “We’re looking forward to reading this year’s essays, hearing fresh ideas and hopefully inspiring students to continue learning through the scholarships and grants we will award.”
Building on last year’s successful program, in which more than 6,500 fifth-graders participated and nearly $50,000 was awarded in scholarships and grants, students from select participating schools will write a one-page essay under the theme “How can I help protect the environment?” Winners will receive a $1,000 United States Savings Bond and the student’s school will also be eligible to win a $5,000 grand prize.
Through December, Luminant will schedule award ceremonies in each participating school district. The school district’s state senator and representative, along with local officials, will be invited to attend.
