State Agency Honors Company for Reforestation Practices
Luminant today announced it has been honored by the Railroad Commission of Texas (RCT) with its highest honor, the Texas Reclamation Award, for the eighth time in nine years.
The award was presented to Luminant in recognition of its highly successful mine reforestation program and practices, proven through research, field trials and the application of sound reclamation and forestry techniques. Luminant has planted more than 25 million trees over the past 30 years to help sustain forests for future generations.
The Texas Reclamation Award is sponsored each year by the RCT’s Surface Mining and Reclamation Division. The RCT is responsible for regulating the environmental impact of the state’s coal production.
Luminant has been honored with the award 12 times since 1987, most recently in 2006 for reforestation efforts at its Oak Hill Mine in East Texas.
“This award is a testament to Luminant’s continued commitment and success with our reclamation practices,” said Gerry Pearson, Luminant vice president and chief mining officer. “Our employees continue to set and meet very high standards of environmental performance.”
Luminant has received more than 80 awards for its mining and reclamation efforts in the last 30 years. In total, the company has mined and reclaimed more than 63,000 acres. While the state requires restoration of the land to its previous condition, in most cases Luminant restores the land to a more productive condition than before it was mined.
“Luminant is recognized nationally as a leader in mine-land reforestation, but our success in restoring the woodland resource would not be possible without the innovation and dedication of our employees,” said Sid Stroud, environmental mining manager for Luminant.
