Luminant Pays Tribute to Veterans Through Year-Round Commitment to Hiring and Mentoring Veterans
Dallas –
Military veterans make up 15 percent of Luminant’s employee base
As Americans honor their military veterans and active duty personnel this Veterans Day, Luminant pays tribute to these men and women through an ongoing commitment to both hiring and mentoring those transitioning from military to civilian life.
“We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our military service members, past and present, for the sacrifices they’ve made to protect and defend our nation and for the freedoms we often take for granted,” says Nancy Perry, Luminant’s chief people officer. “We believe it is important for us to provide support to our returning service men and women as they look to transition into careers here at home. The U.S. military develops and employs a skilled workforce with a diverse range of professional backgrounds, many of which are ideal for the energy industry.”
With veterans accounting for more than 15 percent of Luminant’s employee base, the company takes pride in helping other veterans develop their post-military careers. Through its veteran mentoring program, administered by American Corporate Partners, Luminant employees are matched with veterans to help provide career guidance.
“It’s a transition that can sometimes be difficult,” says Steve Wells, manager of operational excellence and benchmarking for Luminant, former staff sergeant in the Air Force and veteran mentor. “The veterans I’ve worked with need someone to bounce ideas off of and discuss their options. This isn’t just about feeling good because you’re volunteering; we should feel obligated to help these men and women for their service, sacrifice and defense of our country.”
One of Wells’ mentees is Shad Lancaster, a former captain in the U.S. Army Reserves. “Although I spent 22 years in the military and worked my way up, I had never done some of the things managers are expected to do in the private sector, like setting a budget. The great thing about having a mentor is that they can give you some perspective on what’s expected so that you can identify those areas where you need to focus,” says Lancaster.
In addition to mentoring, Luminant also works to help veterans take that first step into civilian life through regular recruiting. Luminant will be attending two upcoming veteran-specific career fairs in search of potential employees to fill more than 200 full-time jobs, including engineering, technician and management positions.
