Luminant Power Track Recognized as a Model of Success
Dallas –
The Aspen Institute’s Skills for America’s Future program identifies Power Track as an innovative and effective solution for developing a skilled work force
The Luminant Power Track program is gaining national attention for its effective collaboration between Luminant and Tyler Junior College.
The Aspen Institute of Washington, D.C., has named Luminant Power Track a Model of Success in its Skills for America’s Future program. This initiative works to reduce the nation’s skills gap by strengthening and increasing alliances between employers and community colleges, helping create a talent pipeline to ensure businesses remain competitive.
Luminant Power Track was created to help replenish technical leadership at Luminant’s power plants. The program began in 2011, offering accepted students scholarships to pursue a two-year associate degree in power plant technology at Tyler Junior College.
“Skills for America’s Future is pleased to have Luminant and Tyler Junior College as new members of our growing network,” said Karen Elzey, director of Skills for America’s Future. “We look forward to working with Luminant and TJC and helping them share their story with other employers and community colleges who seek to train a skills-ready work force.”
“Since Power Track launched, we’ve seen remarkable interest, and we’re already starting to see tremendous value in the program,” added Dirk Hughes, Luminant Academy director. “Our goal is not only to help these students gain skills for a lifetime but to provide them the opportunity to become our next generation of power plant leadership.”
In its second year, Luminant Power Track expanded to include three new options at a second school: a two-year associate degree in electrical technology, mechanical technology or instrumentation and control from Texas State Technical College in Waco.
In addition to the scholarships, participating students are also eligible to receive paid internships at a Luminant power plant and the opportunity to forge a relationship with Luminant that could grow into a full-time job following successful completion of the program.
