Helping meet the needs of Texas’ growing population and economy, Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant’s Unit 2 began commercial operations on Aug. 3, 1993, and since then, has generated more than 180 million net megawatt-hours of electricity. Located in Somervell County, the Luminant plant and its employees have also powered the surrounding communities through more than $1 billion in tax revenue and volunteered tens of thousands of hours in support of area organizations.
“Over the past 20 years, Unit 2 has performed very well in the industry – it’s a testament to our employees’ and contractors’ dedication to safety, operational excellence and community involvement,” said Rafael Flores, Luminant’s chief nuclear officer. “We have employees and teammates that have been a part of the Comanche Peak family since Unit 2 went online. Powering Texas is the backbone of our company, and it’s a legacy that our employees proudly uphold.”
During the past 20 years, Comanche Peak and specifically Unit 2 have made significant contributions, including:
-
Provided safe, dependable, clean-air energy. Unit 2 alone has generated more than 180 million net megawatt-hours of electricity in its 20 years of operation; this is the equivalent of providing the annual consumption of over 500,000 homes.
-
Created high-quality jobs with good wages and benefits. During construction and commissioning, Unit 2 employed more than 10,000 people; currently, nearly 1,000 permanent full-time positions support Units 1 and 2.
-
Sustained a dedicated focus on safety. Proven and successful safety programs have driven employees’ current streak of 8 million safe work hours.
-
Generated hundreds of millions of dollars to surrounding areas. Since 1993, Luminant has contributed more than $1 billion to neighboring communities, through tax payments, payrolls, purchases and other expenditures. In addition, employees and contractors spend more than $1.8 million in the local economy during regularly scheduled maintenance outages.
-
Supported our communities and neighbors in need. Luminant and its employees give back to their communities through donations of money and time to charitable organizations such as the United Way of Hood County and United Fund of Somervell County and to the Glen Rose and Granbury school districts.
